Winter 2024 GRAA FLOOR HOCKEY SEASON INFORMATION
Who:
GRAA Floor Hockey is open to all Glen Ridge children from kindergarten through 4th grade, with two divisions:
- Kindergarten and 1st Grade players (5 vs. 5, no goalies)
- 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade players (5 vs. 5 plus goalies)
Please note that division grade breakdowns are subject to change based upon registrations. If we have enough registrants in any given grade, we will have a division for each grade, as applicable.
What:
Floor Hockey is played in sneakers on a dry (non-ice) rink using modified ice hockey rules. We play with a lightweight street hockey ball.
- No prior hockey experience is necessary.
- Required equipment: Hockey helmet with cage
- Hockey shin guards
- Hockey gloves
- Hockey stick
- Goalie equipment is provided by the league.
When:
Games are played on Saturdays, with the season running from January 6 through March 16 (11 weeks). Holiday weekends (MLK Jr. Day, Presidents Day) are reserved for skills & drills sessions. If registrations are exceptionally high, there may be Sunday games.
Note that because the rink is an outdoor facility, we are subject to occasional cancellations for inclement weather. We make every effort to ensure the rink is playable each week, but if it is excessively slippery (due to rain, snow, or ice) or if the outdoor “real feel” is forecasted to be under 25 degrees F, we must consider cancellations.
Where:
The Rink at Carteret Park, located at the west end of the park, near the playground and dog park.
Why:
Floor Hockey is a great excuse to get outside and run around this winter. The snack bar allows us to create a fun social environment for players, parents, and siblings alike. The season ends with a festival-like day-long tournament on the final weekend of the season.
Want to help?
Know hockey? Please volunteer to be a coach when registering your child(ren).
Don’t know hockey? That’s ok! Things work best when teams have two coaches, one coaching the players, and the other managing substitutions.
We can also use extra hands with concessions, rink prep, and a number of other tasks that make our game days run smoothly – if you want to volunteer, please indicate on the registration form.
